Hundreds of hockey fans experienced an exciting charity hockey event, the Cross Ice Hockey PRO SHOWCASE, on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, MA. The National Cross Ice Hockey League (XHL) sponsored the event, bringing together current and former NHL and AHL professional players to demonstrate the speed and the excitement of CROSS ICE HOCKEY!! Dale Arnold, noted Boston sports radio host, emceed the event that included Shawn McEachern, Keith Aucoin, Carl Corazzini, Ed Ronan, Rich Brennan and members of the Worcester Ice Cats. The professional players teamed with mite and squirt players to demonstrate the newest hockey trend ... cross ice hockey. Attendees lined up for player autographs and participated in a charity auction of hundred of pieces of sports equipment and autographed items (including Boston Bruins tickets & a Bobby Orr autographed jersey). "Cross ice hockey is not a new concept. It's used today by many coaches at all levels," states Ed Ronan, Stanley Cup Champion & President of the XHL. "When I played at Boston University and in the NHL, cross ice was a common form of training and practice. Many knowledgeable hockey people believe cross ice hockey should become more widespread among our youth. The founding of The National Cross Ice Hockey League (XHL), a non-profit organization, hopes to make cross ice hockey a more common child development tool. Playing in smaller areas forces the children to skate quicker, stickhandle quicker, shoot quicker, and most importantly think and react quicker. It conditions the children for improved speed in all aspects of the game. The goal of the Cross Ice Hockey PRO SHOWCASE is to use event proceeds to provide a cash donation to the Mark Bavis Foundation and other local charities." Media coverage of the event included WEEI Radio 850, WRKO Radio 680, WHDH-TV 7and The Boston Globe. Loansnap.com and Wet Dog Advertising filmed the event and included footage in a Loansnap.com commercial.
